Dance Leotard Recommendations
In many dance studios, wearing a leotard and tights is a requirement that is enforced for all dance styles. But, as a tap dancer, is this required?
While some dancers may enjoy wearing a tight piece of fabric on their bodies to dance, others may not. They can feel uncomfortable and exposed. Leotards and tights had become a staple in many dance studios because they allowed for flexibility and no unnecessary clothing getting in the way. This is also a way to make dancers look cohesive and bond together (Source: A Dance Place). This is popular especially in dance styles like ballet and contemporary, where the expression of body movement is heavily stressed.
When it comes to tap dancing specifically, it is a dance that requires sounds made by the feet. Most of the steps that we do are more of an expression through sound than body movements. Upper body movement is not used most when dancing tap.
Personally, when I was dancing in studios, even from a young age, tap dancers were required to wear leotards and tights like others. I never seemed to mind it, but as I got older, I questioned its placement.
But without further ado, let's get into some of my favorite leotards and brands.
BLOCH
Of course, I had to put Bloch on here. Not just their leotards, but their dancewear is also amazing. I have two leotards from this place, and I wear them whenever I get the chance. The fabric is breathable and smooth, perfect for long sessions of dance. They also come in many fun colors and designs that most brands don't offer.
Capezio
I would say that this brand is the cheapest and best alternative for many higher-end/more costly ones. It comes with more basic designs and colors, but it does the job. The quality is good for the price as well. I know many students and people I know who really like this brand for their leotards.
Yumiko
I personally do not own any leotards from Yumiko, but I have heard many good things about them from my peers and others online. It comes in many colors and designs to express your style. However, it does come on more of the pricey side. There are many cheaper alternatives.
Eleve Dancewear
This brand of leotards offers many different prints to choose from, which is what I found different from other brands. The prints come in many varieties and are fun. However, it is also not on the cheaper end of leotards, with the lowest price being 57 dollars.
WearMoi
After some online research, I found out about this brand. I did a lot of digging on this website and reviews, and a lot of people like this brand of leotards. They have many new and fresh designs that I personally really like. You also have the option to customize your own leotards, which is a unique feature. Right now, there is a sale for one of the customizable leotards, so definitely check that out if you are interested.
Please let me know if there are any other brands you would like me to write a review on.
