6 Things Every Tap Dancer Needs!
2/6/2025: 6 Things Every Tap Dancer Needs!

1) Extra Tap Screws
Even if you have super glue, tape, or a screwdriver, an extra screw can fix the problem as well. Many times when dancing, a screw from your taps can fall off. Since they tend to be tiny, they usually get lost. Having extra screws can help replace them when lost and tightened the taps.
2) Super strong glue!
You moments before your performance on stage and your $500 tap shoe breaks. Oh no. Super glue can be used to glue back on a loose tap if you don't have a screwdriver, loose leather, a lace hole, buckle, and more. Having super glue on you or in your dance bag can be extremely beneficial for emergencies, even in dance costumes.
3) Metronome
This one is something that is not needed but can be very helpful when practicing, especially if you are just starting off. Tap dancing is all about rhythm and sounds, so having a metronome can help keep your beats in check. They are extremely affordable and you can even search up any metronome to use online.
4) Wood planks/flooring
Growing up, I always struggled to find an area in my house that was safe to practice and produce clear sounds. The wood on my floors would always get scratched up and the carpet was too muffled. Having extra wood/flooring on top of any surface can elevate your tap dancing experience. It's great for practicing and it's portable. Many are available especially for tap dancing or any piece of flooring would be asked well.
5) Blister Pads/Athletic Tape
Blister pads can be used on the area near your toes to prevent your toes from being hurt during toe stand/busters. I always have pain when constantly doing these and having blister pads prevents some of the shock from reaching your toes, allowing you to dance without much pain. Before I used blister pads, I used athletic tape. This is usually used for sports/dances that use more of the muscles but I used them to tape up my feet. If my feet were a little sore or my toes hurt a bit, I would tape them up to prevent any more damage from happening when I am dancing.
6) Screwdriver
The amount of times I’m dancing and feel a loose tap is unbelievable! I hate the feeling, it's like adding extra weight. The bottom of your tap shoe has taps that are screwed on. Oftentimes, they fall loose. Instead of using a kitchen knife or your nail to screw them back on, a small screwdriver at the bottom of your dance bag will do the trick. It screws the screws on easily and fast without damaging the screw.
