Finding Tap Dancing Companies
Finding Tap Dancing Companies
Finding companies that just take tap dancers is such a hassle. I have called practically hundreds and thousands of places, and only 2-3 said they would take just tap dancers for their company. I was so exhausted by the end of my search, which took countless weeks, just to find three companies that were willing to take me.
For context, around this time of auditioning, I have had more than 10 years of tap dancing experience as a teenager, and have never done any other dance besides tap. I also lived in a suburban area, next to two big industrialized cities. My goal was to find a dance studio with a company that was willing to take just tap dancers.
To my surprise, I didn't realize how difficult this was. I didn't expect it to be so hard to find studios and companies, considering that I lived in a populated area. To make it any worse, as I was calling, I found companies that didn't even compete in tap dancing or have tap dancing lessons in general.
For the companies that were offering me a spot in their competition team, the commitment level and prices were absolutely crazy. The commitment wasn't that much of a problem, because I like to tap dance and wasn't too mad about having to spend time dancing more. However, as someone whose parents are not made of money, the prices of the dance companies were not affordable at all. The companies were huge and big, which made sense to why they had a competition team on tap. But with big companies comes big payments, and I was in a jumble.
From that day forward, I realized that being a tap dancer meant that the opportunities that were given to us, were significantly lower than other styles of dancing. Most of the time, tap dancing is associated with musical theater or some form of theater work. But for those of us who aren't interested in theater, the opportunity pool is so much smaller.
I honestly think that this is not fair, because tap dancing requires a lot of skill that takes years of dedication to master. It is not something you can perfect in a year and requires a lot of mental effort as well. It made me feel worthless, as I thought as though I worked so very hard on the one dance style I genuinely love. Just to be shut down by countless companies that care more about the quantity of dance styles than the quality of them.
I soon realized that my love for tap dancing can be shown in other ways, not just competing with a company. I created this blog, to spread my passion and experience with tap dancing, in hopes that it reaches the right audience. Never ever think that you are not enough, whether it's a dance company, your dream schools, a person, or anything. You are enough.
