Health Benefits of Tap Dancing
3/1/2025: Health Benefits of Tap Dancing
Tap dancing isn't all about rhythm and having fun; there are also some health benefits.
Here I found the most interesting and beneficial health benefits that tap dancing gives dancers.
1) Improved Balance and Coordination
When I was in the second grade, we had a balancing competition- who would be the last one standing on one foot? Guess what, it was me. And I will forever thank my tap dancing classes for that. Balancing is a skill that is not talked about much but is certainly very important. Tap dancing is all about being able to balance and stabilize your feet quickly. Moves like single wings, toe-stands, and pickups help with building up that balance.
I have never been one for hand-eye coordination, but when it comes to my feet, it's a whole other
story. When your feet perform multiple steps at once, individually, or simultaneously, coordination
needs to be developed for it to succeed. Your feet are always moving for the next step, which is why
your coordination greatly improves when tap dancing.
2) Socialization
Being social and having an outside life is a big part of your mental health. I have met some of my
best friends in tap lessons and masterclasses while growing up. Tap is a great way to find people you share the same interest with and enjoy dancing with.
3) Boost Mental Clarity & Focus
On tap, there is so much stuff going on. You have to think about every little step, the rhythm,
what steps are next, balance, and so much more. The concentration and mental effort required
can help improve your ability to focus and your mental clarity.
4) Stronger Bones
This actually applies to all dance types, not just tap dancing. With the constant use of your feet and other body parts, your bones will develop to become stronger. With high-intensity dancing, your bones will
increase in strength. Tap dancing, specifically, is a high-impact and weight-bearing activity, according
to the Arizona Dance Coalition.
5) Boost self-esteem
These health benefits can also go with all dance styles. But with tap dancing specifically,
your self-esteem is boosted by the confidence you gain from mastering steps. Self-esteem also
affects your mental health.
